Questions about Flare
The questions people ask most about the CERN and Mistral model, answered from what has been published. Where the answer is "not announced", we'll change it the day it is.
What is Flare?
Flare is the name Reuters gave to the Large Physics Model CERN and Mistral AI agreed to build on 15 October 2026: one pretrained AI model for collider physics, trained on billions of simulated LHC collisions. CERN's own release does not use the name.
Is Flare released?
No. CERN and Mistral signed a statement of intent. No model, paper, code or weights have been published as of 17 October 2026.
When will Flare be released?
No date has been announced. Reuters reported that neither side gave a timeline or a budget.
Will Flare be open source or open weights?
Not announced. Mistral publishes many models with open weights and CERN publishes its research openly, and CERN's CIO said the work should serve the physics community and be shared, but no licence has been named.
What is a Large Physics Model?
In CERN's sense, a foundation model for physics: one big model pretrained on physics data, here simulated particle collisions, and then tuned for many jobs, the way a large language model is pretrained on text. A 2025 paper used the term more broadly for AI built for physics research in general.
What will Flare be trained on?
Billions of simulated proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, according to CERN. Which simulators and detectors will be used has not been said.
What will Flare do?
CERN lists four jobs: reconstructing collisions, identifying particles, flagging unexpected signals and assessing designs for future detectors.
Is Flare a chatbot like ChatGPT or Le Chat?
Nothing announced suggests so. It uses the same idea as a large language model, but learns from collision data instead of text, and its jobs are inside physics analysis.
Is Flare the same as Mistral Large 4?
No. Mistral Large 4 is Mistral's general-purpose model, with weights due at the end of October 2026. Flare is the planned physics model with CERN.
Is it the first foundation model for particle physics?
CERN calls it the first foundation model for collider physics. University groups have published foundation models for jets since 2024, such as OmniJet-α and OmniLearned, so it would be the first of its kind from CERN and at this scale rather than the first ever.
How much is the CERN and Mistral deal worth?
Not disclosed. Reuters reported no budget.
Is Flare related to solar flares?
No. It is about particle collisions at CERN. The AI that forecasts solar flares is a different model, NASA and IBM's Surya.
Can I use CERN data myself?
Yes, some of it. The CERN Open Data portal holds more than 5 petabytes from nine experiments, free to download. Flare itself is to be trained on simulated collisions.
Who runs this site?
Flare Physics AI is an independent site published by Bonkeno Ltd. We are not CERN or Mistral AI and have no inside information.
